Scaling & Root Planing

The initial stage of treatment is a thorough cleaning that includes scaling to remove plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line.  The tooth roots may also be smoothed, allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.  In mild cases of periodontitis, this may be the only type of treatment needed.  In moderate and severe cases, scaling and root planing is performed first to get the tissue healthy to improve the success of other treatments.

Antibiotics or irrigation with anti-microbials (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be recommended to help control the growth of bacteria that create toxins and cause periodontitis. In some cases, antibiotics may be placed in the periodontal pockets after scaling and planing. This is done to control infection and to encourage normal healing.
