Periodontal disease causes gum tissue to become infected and loss of bone surrounding teeth. This results in pockets, uneven levels of gum tissue and bone. Traditionally, periodontal disease is treated by eliminating the gum pockets by removing the infected gum tissue and recontouring uneven bone to a natural shape. Although this is an effective way of treating gum disease, new and more sophisticated procedures are used routinely today to re-grow bone tissue.
